The discussion of social networks and Digital video games is a new issue. The use of these type of websites and the effect they have on the students and the classroom was the topic of the article. The discussion of the game creation website called Starlogo and how the teacher feels it is a very useful tool in the classroom and that he can teach the students things that he normally couldn't. The fact that he can teach students about the affect of forest fires based on a computer program and the way they work. This is a topic that is hard to explain without a visual effect and this game gave this teacher the ability to show the demonstrate to the students.
What problems does bringing these new technologies into the classroom?
Teachers tend to not like experimenting because there is an unknown when letting the students play with the technology. The learning experience can not be facilitated as much as teachers would like when dealing with these technologies.
How are classrooms using the social networking and cyber games successfully?
Classrooms have successfully used social networking and cyber games have a student-centered learning environment. This environment requires the teacher to help the students as they explore and interact with the tool.

Journal # 6: A New Concept of Citizenship for the Digital Age
Greenhow, C. (2010). A New concept of citizenship for the digital age. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(6), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=March_April_No_6_1&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4516&ContentID=25564&DirectListComboInd=D
The amount of technology that is used in our lives today is so different than it was when I was going to school. This makes it important for teachers and administrators to assess the amount of technology that will be introduced to the students. Digital citizenship is one of those areas that is important to teach the students, but the issues it presents also need to be assessed. Greenhow says, "Digital Citizenship is important not only for achieving standards-based outcomes but also for ensuring equitable access to learning and career opportunities as educational and professional networking moves online." Its very important for students to be current with technology especially with job opportunities, tests, and applications all being online. The more the students know how to do online the better off they will be once they graduate. The job of administrators is to make sure that we are preparing students to survive and be successful in the real world and I believe digital citizenship is part of that.
Is digital citizenship a requirement for teachers to teach their students?
I am not sure that it is a requirement, but teaching them technology is a necessity. If digital citizenship isn't a requirement I am sure that it will be very soon. The technology and need for students to use it is present.
How do children learn to use the Internet ethically, legally, and responsibly?
I think the teachers will have a responsibility to make sure that all the students know what is ethical, legal, and responsible use of the Internet.

Journal #7: Interactive Whiteboards
Interactive Whiteboards: An interactive whiteboard is a board that is displayed either by attaching it to the wall or on a display stand. A computer is connected to a projector which projects the computer screen onto the board. The person can then interact with the board either with a pen, finger, or other device.
Are Interactive Whiteboards Necessary?
The boards seem to have people on opposite sides. I think that the point that the teacher is up in front of the classroom and that states of sense of being in charge is true. Sara saying that the kids can go up and interact with a regular white board do not sure why the board is so special. I see a major problem with the interactive whiteboard is the cost and if a teacher has to put it out themselves most would choose the least costly. The discussion has so many alternatives and different technologies to explore with a range of costs so it would all depend on the school and who's paying for it.
How are you using your classroom Smartboard?
The teachers seem to use this more as a tool for the whole class to explore and play games on. The smartboard is used as a tool for the class to explore things all together. It also seems to be used as a tool for the kids to be able to play games on and the teacher be able to keep an eye on. According to the teachers the students seem to be even more engaged in learning when they are able to use the smartboards.

NETS PowerPoint Rubric NETS-T III
Using rcampus we created a rubric for grading our power point presentation or prezi presentations. This website is a great tool for teachers to use to retrieve already created rubrics or to create their own rubrics.
Nets Power Point Presentation NETS-T II
We used prezi to create a pesentation on the NETS for students. Prezi is a great online presentation tool that is more visually stimulating than a power point presentation. The tool would be something that could be taught to students as a way to learn about a topic and then teach it to the class.

Social Bookmarking NETS-T IV
We created a Delicious account where we bookmarked various websites. As part of this assignment we visited a cyberbullying website where we took a quiz to find out whether we were cyber bullies. We also explored a website that gave lesson plans on various subjects. We explored many websites that would be beneficial to an educator.
1- Presidential Diary from Lydon Johnson and saw his diaries for the times he was president. It showed what he wrote about during the days of being a president and his schedules. The website did only show a selected few dates, but the detail and who was present was cool. The benefit of using a site like this is that its right in front of you and its the real deal. Like the diary you can see the actual pages. These are things kids may never get to see and can be very educational for them.
2- Racial and Ethnic minorities, English Language Learners, Students with Disabilities, Students from low-income families are the groups affected by the achievement gap. The first area that would help me become a Culturally Competent teacher would be engaging school staff in discussions and activities to help explore feelings of the school. I feel engaging with other teachers about their feelings about culture and diversity can help me be more aware. This would be especially helpful if the staff is culturally diverse which the school I volunteer in is. The next one I would use is making sure that the mission statement at the school commits to cultural competence. The mission statement of the school I would choose to work at is very important and if I could help to change it this is one area that would be first. The ability to change the mission statement might not be very easy for a teacher to accomplish. I think if I could get on that committee the need to change that and put that in would be understood. The last area I could help in would be to gather and organize material to help the school be more culturally competent. I enjoy research and its something that a teacher could do without the administration having to be a part of directly. Research and articles are good ways to show people and staff how to be culturally competent and be aware of their actions.
3-I am not a cyber bully, yay. I have never really used the Internet for anything other than to talk with friends and family. I can say that I have heard of friends doing this type of thing, but just never felt the need to. I read the article on youth empowered solutions for cyberbullying. I always think of the show Criminal Minds and the episode they did on a cyberbully getting teens to commit suicide and that's why I choose to read this section. I don't think the section really talked about how to handle it except to ignore it and most kids can't do that. I think that the teacher should try and be aware of this happening, but like the article says their is not much they can do because its not happening on school grounds. I do think that this article helped in telling us that there are ways to discuss what is happening with administration and parents in order to stop it. I think that discussing this with the students and making them aware that it happens can help them deal with it better.
4- I explored the Math section under subject access because I love math. The links on this website to helping kids learn and understand math better are incredible. These links could be given to parents so that they would be able to help their kids. A student who is struggling could use some of these online games to get a better understanding of the subject area. Also a parent could use the Dr. Math when trying to help their child especially if they don't know how to do the problem. There is also lesson plan help on here that a teacher could use if the students are struggling with a particular lesson. The "Teacher Helpers" section is a great tool if a teacher is unsure of anything. The presentation support, rubric support, help on standards and connecting them with a different standard system. A new student who comes into your class from a different state that uses different standards would be a reason you would want to go on this website to figure out where they are according to your standards. Also if you are a first time teacher and want to know how to grade specific paper.
5. Logical-Mathematical 69% Interpersonal 69% Bodily-kinesthetics 69%
I learned that the NO Child left behind Act is not benefitting our students and here is a school trying to get students to learn according to their intelligence and they cant because of the massive testing we have to teach to know.
6. Grade selected: 3rd-5th Subject selected: Math and Technology Lesson: Caring for Hair This lesson plans sends kids on a hunt for information about how different people care for their hair. Students would be asked to research a specific hair care place and how people that come in there care for their hair. They would create a report and venn diagram to represent the different ways of caring for hair. I would use this as a cultural lesson to show kids that even the simplest things are done in different ways. Cultural is just one aspect that changes the way we do things. The lesson would teach kids that everyone does things different and that isn't a reason to judge them.
7.Powder cocaine (largely used by wealthy people) and crack cocaine (largely used by economically disadvantaged people) contain roughly the same amount of the drug per gram. Under federal law, how much of these substances must an individual be convicted of possessing to be sentenced to a mandatory minimum of five years in prison? I found this question very odd for a cultural awareness quiz. I know that this is showing the drug choice based on economic status and how the amount you can hold in order to get prison time is based on that. I do feel that being able to answer this question does not have to do with being culturally aware.
The U.S. military budget is by far the highest of any country in the world. How much higher is the U.S. military budget than that of China, the world’s second biggest military spender? This was another question that I felt was irrelevant to being culturally aware.
8.I scored a 50%. I think this is very important so you know the ethics of the internet and don't offend anyone. :@

Journal # 4: "Playing with Skype"
Weller, T. (2010). Playing with Skype, Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(6). Retrieved from www.iste.org/AM/template.cfm
I personally have used Skype many times to keep in contact with family members that live in other states. When I saw the title of the article I was very intrigued. I think that the use of Skype for something like a music class is a very cool idea. The students are able to view concerts live from a computer which would not cost the school anything extra. The schools would be able to make use of the computers and sound equipment they already have for assemblies to use for the music classes. The classes would get to observe composers and their students, but it also allowed for the students to ask questions and engage in conversation.
The other benefit of using a program like Skype is that it is very self explanatory. The composers in the article that used it did it without any problems.
Are their other subject areas that a program like this would work for?
Using this in a music class is a great subject to make use of it. However, I think Art and P.E. might also be subject areas that could benefit from using this program. If a Art teacher could get a professional artist to do a class over Skype, that would be an experience that those students would never forget.
Would the use of this be affected by what type of Internet connection was used?
The article does say that the school would need a broadband connections, but from experience the feed can be horrible if the connections is not strong enough and a fast enough speed.

Journal # 3: "Navigate the Digital Rapids"
Lindsay, J, & Davis, V. (2010). Navigate the Digital Rapids. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(6), Retrieved from www.iste.org/AM/template.cfm
This is a digital age; computers and technology are important and part of most people's everyday life. I think incorporating technology in the classroom is important, but the amount depends on the grade level of the school. There is an age when too much technology in the classsroom can interfere with the everyday subjects the students need to learn. There is a part in the article where it talks about internet safety and I found this particular part the most interesting. I really disagree with the part that states, "educating students makes the Internet a safer place." I think that educating the students doesn't necessarily make it safer. There are so many things the kids can do on their that can get them in trouble and no matter how much you watch over their shoulder there is still the chance they will do what they are told not to. I just think the internet should be left to the older kids and only with adult supervision
At what grade level should Technology be introduced to students?
I really believe that technology at too young of an age can just interfere with the everday instructions. My second grader is allowed to use the computer to play games, but in this case the learning games are not as affective as they should be. I am not sure of the correct age to introduce it, but I think the teacher needs to take into consideration the students in the classroom.
Should we put the learning in the hands of students?
I think there needs to be so much instruction and guidance when it comes to letting them learn technology. A student can't be left with a computer to do whatever they would like.

Bull, G, Alexander, C, & Ferster, B. (2010). Finding students who learn through media. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(5), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm
In previous classes we have learned that students learn in all different ways and as educators we need to find out what way that is. There can be some students that will learn with technology as a tool. The students who are interested in computers and technology can use that to learn in class can better grasp the topic. The use of technology to create videos and power points is a great learning tool and can help the student better learn the topic. I can appreciate that some students learn more from creating a digital storyboard than from writing an essay because I feel the same way. I would much rather create a storyboard and tend to learn more from it than I do an essay. I believe that when kids can learn in a way they enjoy they will learn more. However, there are some students that will take advantage of it and spend so much time on the fun part of the project that they will not actually learn the necessary material.
What percentage of kids didn't learn from the storyboard or essay?
The article says that 15% of the students were not interested in either assignment. That number is to be expected because you are always going to have those students that just aren't engaged in the topic at hand. I think the number of students that learned from using just the storyboard would be an interesting number to know.
Does doing this change the amount of instruction time significantly?
Using storyboards to teach history can not always be the way we teach because it would take too long to teach. The idea of using technology to instruct is something that should only be used occasionally unless it is a technology class. The idea is a good one on a once in a while basis.

The idea of virtual field trips does have its benefits especially to those schools that lack funding. The idea of being able to bring the museums to the classroom so that the school does not have to come up with the extra money is very beneficial. The interactive VFT would be really good especially historical sites. In a history lesson a teacher could use this to see historical sites on the east coast. The idea of being able to take kids in California to see the battlefields from the east coast would be extremely helpful. The virtual field trip idea for those museums that are in other states that might be of interest and now the teacher can show the students it from the classroom. However, Schools that have the funding, I think should still go on field trips because it gives the chance for some kids to go places they may never have the chance to otherwise. I also think that a field trip is better because the kids get a better close up view and fresh air out of the school setting.
Would schools have to spend any money for the VFT's?
About 30% of schools already have the equipment they would need to conduct these Virtual Field Trips. So those that don't would have to buy the equipment. The actual field trips can be accessed for a small fee, but if the equipment is already there then that is the only cost and it is less than a regular field trip.
Are the field trips geared toward a specific age?
As far as the article says there is no specific age group it is just for school age students. The subject area or type of field trip would be looked at the same way they are now as a regular field trip.

As far as the article says there is no specific age group it is just for school age students. The subject area or type of field trip would be looked at the same way they are now as a regular field trip.

Introducing Rebecca Rutherford
Hi, My name is Rebecca Rutherford and I am from Valley Center, CA. I have lived in two places my whole life; Valley Center and Wildomar, CA. I have been married for 11 years and have a wonderful helpful husband who I would not be here without. We have 4 children together. A son who is 8, three daughters who are 7,6, and 4 years old. As far as my schooling goes, I attended Valley Center Elementary and Middle School, and then went to Orange Glen High School. I went to Palomar College right out of High School. I went there for about 2 years before I had my first baby and had completed 60 units. So about 3 years ago I decided to go and finish my bachelors degree now that my kids were in school and I had a little bit of free time. I was accepted to University of Redlands and have attended night school ever since. I have gone every Thursday night for 2 years with the help of my husband. It has been a huge commitment and without my husbands full support I could have never done this. I applied to the crudential program in the fall at CSUSM for a multiple subject crudential so that I can continue to work with kids and fulfill my lifelong dream.
Technology is not my strong suit at all, but it does not scare me either. I have a very nice HP laptop and it is my saving grace because I can do school work while at kids practices. My other favorite piece of technology is my cell phone because I know that my kids can always get a hold of me no matter what. I am planning on getting a blackberry in June when my contract is up and can switch companies. That way I can have the internet always on me. I am a PC user at this time only because the laptop was more affordable. I would love to eventually get a mac. I currently use the 07 version of Office and have had a huge adjustment because their is a huge difference from the 03 version.
I attended public schools all my life and really believe that the teachers are what make the school. If teachers don't have a strong school background and have not been taught by a school that believes in the best education then they will not be good. CSUSM says that they want to change this system and ensure that the teacher are professionals. I believe this school is devoted to producing the best educated and prepared teachers and that is the reason I applied here.
