The amount of technology that is used in our lives today is so different than it was when I was going to school. This makes it important for teachers and administrators to assess the amount of technology that will be introduced to the students. Digital citizenship is one of those areas that is important to teach the students, but the issues it presents also need to be assessed. Greenhow says, "Digital Citizenship is important not only for achieving standards-based outcomes but also for ensuring equitable access to learning and career opportunities as educational and professional networking moves online." Its very important for students to be current with technology especially with job opportunities, tests, and applications all being online. The more the students know how to do online the better off they will be once they graduate. The job of administrators is to make sure that we are preparing students to survive and be successful in the real world and I believe digital citizenship is part of that.
Is digital citizenship a requirement for teachers to teach their students?
I am not sure that it is a requirement, but teaching them technology is a necessity. If digital citizenship isn't a requirement I am sure that it will be very soon. The technology and need for students to use it is present.
How do children learn to use the Internet ethically, legally, and responsibly?
I think the teachers will have a responsibility to make sure that all the students know what is ethical, legal, and responsible use of the Internet.
