We created a Delicious account where we bookmarked various websites. As part of this assignment we visited a cyberbullying website where we took a quiz to find out whether we were cyber bullies. We also explored a website that gave lesson plans on various subjects. We explored many websites that would be beneficial to an educator.
1- Presidential Diary from Lydon Johnson and saw his diaries for the times he was president. It showed what he wrote about during the days of being a president and his schedules. The website did only show a selected few dates, but the detail and who was present was cool. The benefit of using a site like this is that its right in front of you and its the real deal. Like the diary you can see the actual pages. These are things kids may never get to see and can be very educational for them.
2- Racial and Ethnic minorities, English Language Learners, Students with Disabilities, Students from low-income families are the groups affected by the achievement gap. The first area that would help me become a Culturally Competent teacher would be engaging school staff in discussions and activities to help explore feelings of the school. I feel engaging with other teachers about their feelings about culture and diversity can help me be more aware. This would be especially helpful if the staff is culturally diverse which the school I volunteer in is. The next one I would use is making sure that the mission statement at the school commits to cultural competence. The mission statement of the school I would choose to work at is very important and if I could help to change it this is one area that would be first. The ability to change the mission statement might not be very easy for a teacher to accomplish. I think if I could get on that committee the need to change that and put that in would be understood. The last area I could help in would be to gather and organize material to help the school be more culturally competent. I enjoy research and its something that a teacher could do without the administration having to be a part of directly. Research and articles are good ways to show people and staff how to be culturally competent and be aware of their actions.
3-I am not a cyber bully, yay. I have never really used the Internet for anything other than to talk with friends and family. I can say that I have heard of friends doing this type of thing, but just never felt the need to. I read the article on youth empowered solutions for cyberbullying. I always think of the show Criminal Minds and the episode they did on a cyberbully getting teens to commit suicide and that's why I choose to read this section. I don't think the section really talked about how to handle it except to ignore it and most kids can't do that. I think that the teacher should try and be aware of this happening, but like the article says their is not much they can do because its not happening on school grounds. I do think that this article helped in telling us that there are ways to discuss what is happening with administration and parents in order to stop it. I think that discussing this with the students and making them aware that it happens can help them deal with it better.
4- I explored the Math section under subject access because I love math. The links on this website to helping kids learn and understand math better are incredible. These links could be given to parents so that they would be able to help their kids. A student who is struggling could use some of these online games to get a better understanding of the subject area. Also a parent could use the Dr. Math when trying to help their child especially if they don't know how to do the problem. There is also lesson plan help on here that a teacher could use if the students are struggling with a particular lesson. The "Teacher Helpers" section is a great tool if a teacher is unsure of anything. The presentation support, rubric support, help on standards and connecting them with a different standard system. A new student who comes into your class from a different state that uses different standards would be a reason you would want to go on this website to figure out where they are according to your standards. Also if you are a first time teacher and want to know how to grade specific paper.
5. Logical-Mathematical 69% Interpersonal 69% Bodily-kinesthetics 69%
I learned that the NO Child left behind Act is not benefitting our students and here is a school trying to get students to learn according to their intelligence and they cant because of the massive testing we have to teach to know.
6. Grade selected: 3rd-5th Subject selected: Math and Technology Lesson: Caring for Hair This lesson plans sends kids on a hunt for information about how different people care for their hair. Students would be asked to research a specific hair care place and how people that come in there care for their hair. They would create a report and venn diagram to represent the different ways of caring for hair. I would use this as a cultural lesson to show kids that even the simplest things are done in different ways. Cultural is just one aspect that changes the way we do things. The lesson would teach kids that everyone does things different and that isn't a reason to judge them.
7.Powder cocaine (largely used by wealthy people) and crack cocaine (largely used by economically disadvantaged people) contain roughly the same amount of the drug per gram. Under federal law, how much of these substances must an individual be convicted of possessing to be sentenced to a mandatory minimum of five years in prison? I found this question very odd for a cultural awareness quiz. I know that this is showing the drug choice based on economic status and how the amount you can hold in order to get prison time is based on that. I do feel that being able to answer this question does not have to do with being culturally aware.
The U.S. military budget is by far the highest of any country in the world. How much higher is the U.S. military budget than that of China, the world’s second biggest military spender? This was another question that I felt was irrelevant to being culturally aware.
8.I scored a 50%. I think this is very important so you know the ethics of the internet and don't offend anyone. :@
